Forward Google Purchased Domain

There have been some difficulties in forwarding mydomain.com to www.mydomain.com when mydomain.com was purchased from Google. GoDaddy has suggested the following steps which work.

Disclaimer: Removing of A records configured by Google is non-standard. GApps seem to work fine without them although something could break in the future so document the removed records.

1) Log into the GApps control panel and navigate to Domain Settings then to the Domain Names page. Click on Advanced DNS settings and log into the GoDaddy control panel.Within the GoDaddy control panel, click on the link to your domain.

2) Click 'Set Name servers' from the menu and make sure the Default Parked Nameservers are selected. If not, select them, and Save Changes. It will take 24 to 48 hours for any changes to be
propagated to all servers.

3) Click on the link for Forwarding. Select Enabled and in the Forward To: field type http://www.mydomain.com. (No dot on the end). Click either 301
(Moved Permanently) or 302 (Moved Temporarily). Do not use masking. Click OK.

4) Click on the link: Total DNS Control and MX Records. You will remove the three A records pointing to Google servers (typically: 64.233.179.121, 66.249.81.121, and 72.14.207.121). Please record any A records you change. Now add an A record: @ pointing to 64.202.189.170 with a 1 hour TTL.

5) Wait 24 to 48 hours for all changes to propagate. http://mydomain.com will now take you to the home page of your website that you
created with Page Creator.

CIPA Compliance & K-12 Schools using GApps

Per Google Appls Advisor Ryan regarding the question "Is Google Apps email CIPA compliant?"

"You can find a list of our case studies (including K-12
schools) at this link here: http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/customers.html"

"As for legal compliance, Google Apps does not currently have anything
written into it's agreements that guarantees compliance. As you
probably know, compliance is set up by the user of the technology and
not the technology itself. With that said, Google can be set up in
such a manner that it will comply with legal requirements. For
example, if you would like to set up a mail gateway with an approval
system, this can be done. Google Apps have partners that can do it, or you can
set it up yourself. Here is a link for more information:

mail.domainalias.com

Setup domainalias.com as a domain alias to mydomain.com.  In order to create mail.domainalias.com, do the following:

Within the dns records for domainalias.com, create a subdomain of mail.domainalias.com and point it to http://mail.google.com/a/mydomain.com. This is NOT a CNAME for mail. It is a real subdomain.

Trying subdomain for mail.mydomain.com and see if this gets past the problem of CNAME of mail pointing to ghs.google.com not working if mydomain.com is forwarded.

* User's existing email archives will still be stored by Google.
* If Email is added back as a service, users will be able to sign
in to view saved mail.
* This may take up to 30 minutes to take effect

Although it says 30 minutes, it might take well over a day

Transferring Domain to Another Host

You can transfer your Google purchased domain name to another hosting service.  Choose the host you want, e.g. GoDaddy, eNom, others, and get their steps for making the transfer. You will need to have your domain name unlocked and obtain the Authorization code from the current host.

If you are currently hosted by GoDaddy, log into your GApps Control panel, click on Domain Settings, then Domain Names.  Next click on the Advanced DNS settings and sign-in to the GoDaddy DNS console using the  Sign-in name and Password provided. Click the link for your domain name. You will see a link for
the Authorization Code: Send by Email. Click this and have the Code sent to you. You will also see a
line labeled Locked. If the status says locked then click on it and change it to unlocked. This is
very important for allowing the Transfer to occur.

If you are currently using eNom, you will not be able to get the Authorization Code or unlock your domain by signing into the Advanced DNS function for eNom.  Instead you'll have to send an email to GoogleClients@enom.com. To see the typical response from eNom and what you will need to
do, see this thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/hosted-settingup/browse_thread/thread/f59bc8906d2f8eb3/f991977c3158b7c9?hl=en&utoken=Sm5HMzMAAABdyV45puCDqvZ6kZybelPyTrwW3sTr_SH3FM3gfEQcstTxrihkuw-pUAOmpHZGa-r0UEnFPSFW6wsHHKnE_us9

You may be limited by ICANN rules and can't transfer an account for 60
days after its creation or last move.

Delete/Cancel my account

Here are the directions for canceling GApps for you domain:
http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=56236&query=cancel+account&topic=&type=

If you purchased your domain name from Google while signing up for GApps then you must transfer your domain name to a Domain Registrar of your choosing. The receiving Registrar will give you the steps to use but you must log into the Domain Registrar set up by Google for you - either GoDaddy or eNom. You will want to get the Authorization code from GoDaddy or eNom and unlock your domain. You may transfer from GoDaddy(Google account) to GoDaddy(personal account) using this process. DO NOT attempt to delete your account until you have transfered your domain name.

You may be limited by ICANN rules and can't transfer an account for 60 days after its creation or last move.

Pop and IMAP Setup

In setting up pop3 or IMAP on your Desktop email client, one of the most important things to realize is that that you use username@mydomain.com for the 'User Name' located in the Login Information section of the pop3/IMAP setup box. Don't use username@gmail.com when configuring pop3 or IMAP for one of your mydomain.com accounts. Secondly use the standard gmail servers. Don't use smtp.mydomain.com as the server. The following Help pages will work as long as you use the correct User Name. Help pages:

Creating a Custom URL

Here is a Help page which will allow you to create a custom URL for applications. For Web Pages, e.g. www.mydomain.com, you will only see your domain name and not a reference to Google. For others, e.g. mail.mydomain.com, it will be an easily remembered URL for your domain users. The Help page will show an example for mail. For other applications, e.g. Web Pages, just click on the appropriate application on the Dashboard and look for a change URL. There will be a suggested subdomain, e.g. www. Some of the common subdomains are www, mail, calendar, start, and others.

GApps Website: Limitations and Transferring website to GApps

GApps allows web page creation through Page Creator. These web sites are intended for simpler designs where php, mySQL, and ftp are not needed. You can upload one web page at a time but can't currently download pages designed by Page Creator. This Help page describes some of the limitations and considerations in moving your current website to GApps:

Moving email to GApps

Gmail Mail Fetcher is on way to transfer email from gmail to GApps:

The free program gXFER handles all combinations of email transfers involving gmail and GApps mail including gmail to GApps, GApps to GApps and other combinations. No longer listed.

gMOVE is another solution that allows you to add labels. See:
http://www.google.com/enterprise/marketplace/

A 3rd way of transferring your email is open up an IMAP connection to one of your domain accounts. Then you can drag and drop messages from one directory to the other. One forum member reports that folders and subfolders in Outlook received labels in the GApps account, e.g. correspondence/family, correspondence/family/wife, etc. Another way of saying this:

You can maintain your folders when you migrate. In the GApps webmail they will show up as labels. Sub Folders will look like: TopFolder\SubFolder\Subfolder

If you connect Outlook to the gmail imap server, the folders will look the same. In addition you will have a [Gmail] folder.

Error when signing up: Already Registered or Begin Verified

Adding a Domain Alias

· Follow this process for creating a domain alias.

· Do not change anything additional on the aliased machine other than what is defined in the process. For example, don’t add CNAMES or A-records.

· Most aliased domain problems are related to 1) didn’t wait long enough for changes to propagate and 2) added something not defined in the procedure

Subdomains – Set MX records per GApp procedure but use subdomain.mydomain.com as host server name in the records.Make sure MX priorities are set correctly for your domain host. At least ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM should be the highest priority.

Problem with Yahoo and AOL: Remote host said: 550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable. Try looking at your domain’s A-record. Email hosts such as Yahoo and AOL have a hard time going around the Address Record to get to the MX. Should be set to your domain host – default.
